The SEO strategy of a site will make or break its success, so it is vitally important for a site owner to develop a strategy which will keep the page ranking for a very long time. Do this right the first time and you can save hours of tweaking and fixing down the road.
Most any site owner knows the basics of keyword density and HTML tags, but it is surprising to note how many miss one small step which can boost their rank right away: LSI keywords. LSI stands for Latent Semantic Index, which can really mean a host of different things. When talking about search engines, however, LSI keywords are keywords which the engine’s bots will associate with your main keyword.
For example, if your keyword happened to be “SEO strategy”, you would obviously want to use the phrase 1 – 4% of the time on the page. But you can also use keywords like “search engine placement”, “small business SEO” and “organic search engine optimization” because the search engines associate all of these extra phrases with the main keyword. This is an excellent way to boost the page relevancy in the eyes of the search bots without stuffing or spamming your main keyword.
Too often a page owner will concentrate solely on the main keywords and leave the rest up to chance or fate. This is the same as doing the job half-way and leaving money on the table. With just a bit of extra effort upfront, you can sprinkle the LSI keywords in the content and soar above your competition.
As for the density of these LSI keywords, there is no set metric. Many believe you should have a density of around 3% for your main keyword and a density of about 1% for each of the LSI keywords. With this strategy, you will want to limit yourself to 2 – 3 LSI keywords to avoid looking like a spammer.
Now the obvious question is: how do you know what are the LSI keywords are for your main phrase? Luckily, this could not be easier to find out. There are dozens of free and inexpensive tools used to find keywords. A couple of examples are the Google Keyword tool and freekeywords.wordtracker.com. As you do a search for your main keywords, sort the results by relevancy. The key phrases which pop up around your main phrase are the LSI keywords. try it out with the “SEO strategy” example given above and you will find the other two phrases mentioned towards the top of the results.
So as you write or order you web content, pay attention to LSI keywords and sprinkle them in. It’s a quick and easy way to build yourself an authority site and soar to the first page of the SERPs.
