What exactly is a mobile website, and why should your business have one? A mobile website basically “shrinks your desktop website” down to a smaller, easier-to-read website that fits perfectly on a smartphone or iPhone. Whereas, on a desktop website, you are trying to put as much information as you can in order to inform your reader, almost the opposite can be said of a mobile site.

You want your mobile website to be a miniature version of your desktop. Even though Smartphones have very fast processors, they still don’t have the speed and capacity of your desktop. So, your mobile site needs to be fast and easily read, but still engaging and informative.

A good mobile site will also have “Call to Action” buttons on the front page. These buttons will allow the user to perform numerous tasks just by pressing the button with their thumb. Some of the more popular “Call to Actions” buttons are Call Me Now, Email Me Now, and Set Up An Appointment, among many others. This allows the user to very easily and quickly call you and/or shoot off an email.

A short video is also another option to keep the user engaged. The video can be an introduction to your company and a synopsis of your business. Or, a really fun and popular idea is to offer a special of the month, giving the user a discount on your products or services. Currently, a good video length would be from 1 to 3 minutes. Once again, you don’t want to slow down the load time of your site with an overly long video.

Having a mobile website will also help users find your business when they are performing a local search. The major search directories, such as Google, Bing, Yellow Pages and Yahoo love mobile sites. These local search directories will almost always give a mobile site higher placement than a desktop site. For instance, Google places a very high weight in its algorithm on sites that are mobile. So much so, that Google is actually changing their entire platform from desktop websites to mobile websites.

Why is Google going mobile? Because there are currently 4.8 billion smartphone users compared to 1.7 billion desktop users. Of those users that are searching for local businesses, almost 30% will actually call or visit the business within the first day of performing the search.

There are many more statistics on the importance of a mobile website for your business, but this article is a general overview of the importance to get your mobile site now!
